The Swiss Federal Council temporarily suspends custom duties on import medical goods. Such measure was set out to ease the import of medical equipment such as masks, gloves, disinfectant, protective goggles to face COVID-19 emergency in the country.
The regulation entered into force on 10 April 2020 and applies until 9 October 2020.
What are the main consequences?
- cheaper imports of medical equipment
- decreased administrative burden
- no need for importers to attest the origin of duty-free import products
- private importers are equated with the civil protection authorities of the confederation and the cantons, who already have the right to import duty-free protective material.
